PHOTOS: Local Sailors Race To Duwamish Head From Des Moines

If you were anywhere near the Marina this morning, you couldn’t help but notice the large fleet of colorful sailboats just offshore. The occasion was the Duwamish Head Race hosted by the Three Tree Point Yacht Club.

This annual event sees boats from around the Puget Sound area converging on Des Moines to race from just outside the marina to Duwamish Head off Alki. The race is normally out and back but light winds today had some of the racers speculating that the competition might be called at the half-way point due to time constraints.

The Duwamish Head Race is part of the Southern Sound Series of sailing races. This series has been raced annually for over 25 years, making it one of the oldest in the Puget Sound area.

From shore, the large, brightly colored spinnaker sails carried by most of the boats made for a beautiful sight on an otherwise gray Winter day.

WLB photographer Michael Brunk was at the marina today shooting from several vantage points. You can click the image above or the thumbnails below to view high resolution photos.

Beautiful shots! Wondering if any might be available? I own that boat that is going the ‘wrong way’ (!) Looked pretty good over there near the shore for a bit..
