I read Mr. Wasson’s letter with great interest. I can certainly sympathize and I think I understand his frustration. No, this is not where we wanted or hoped the city and its police force would be in 2012.
But 2008 and the mess in the financial and housing markets exploded on us all. Not just here in Des Moines or even just in the US, but repercussions the world over followed and almost no one saw it coming. Should we have been smarter or more attuned to the something-for-nothing scam gathering momentum? Of course. But no one wanted to look the gift horse in the mouth. Times were good.
So yes, it would have been great had our incumbents been smarter than nearly anybody else. Maybe then they could have reasonably kept their 2006-7 promises. I believe they – like all of us – set out to do the right thing. Reality just got in the way. Unusual circumstances forced very painful city budget cuts just as it did in households everywhere.
