Tax Protestors Picket Des Moines Post Office

If you happened by the Des Moines Post Office on South 216th at lunch today, you might have noticed a couple of folks holding signs out front or at the mailbox around the side.

It was a national political action called “Tax the 1%” that is just the first event in a six week plan called the “99% Spring.”

While most of the effort is taking place in large metro areas like Seattle, there’s an emphasis on trying to have a presence in smaller cities.

The Des Moines event was organized by SeaTac resident Mac Mintaka, who was inspired to get involved by the economic landscape he sees tilting away from him.

“I’ve been seeing the shifting of wealth from middle and lower class people to upper class. Jobs aren’t being created for us but wealth is being created for the very few.”

Also protesting was Tom Hale, a retiree from Kent spurred into action over recent politics, saying “I’m appalled at the direction the Republicans ar taking this country.”

Around the side of the Post Office, greeting drivers as they pulled up to drop mail in the outside box, was protestor Kathryn Drinkard.

Her sisters kids motivated her to participate in the action. “It’s insane that corporations get refunds when they don’t pay any taxes! And then we pass that debt on to our kids and grandkids,” she said.

One thing tying these three protestors together beyond their believe that the tax system needs attention was their experience with protests in the past. Practically none.

All three are fairly new to this kind of political action and had just reached the point where they felt like they needed to do something to help influence the changes they want to see.

Overall, it was a smaller turn out than expected but the Kathryn assured us that this is just a beginning, and that more events would be coming up during the six week campaign.

Do any of these people think Obama is going to solve the tax problem?

Do any of these people think Obama is going to solve any problem??? Vote Romney!!!

  3. cs says:

Do you think Romney is going to help the lower and middle class? LOL!!!!!

The 99% Spring isn’t about parties or politics. It’s about people, as in “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”

I appreciate corporations – after all, without them I’d almost certainly be hungry, cold, homeless, and less healthy. I don’t want them destroyed. I just believe that they shouldn’t have inalienable HUMAN rights such as free speech, especially when free speech = unlimited campaign contributions and freedom to buy laws and legislators.

When money becomes speech, there’s no such thing as “free” speech.

Kathry D, I think I hear the Occupy movement calling you back to your tent.

And for CS, Romney certainly can’t do any worse than Obama. I willing to give him an opportunity, hoping that he might just do slightly better….beats where we are at right now.

I find the sign hilarious! Rebuild the economy and tax the 1%…really? Obama in a speech said “this is not politics, it’s math”. I’m not a math major but this is pretty basic math. The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates that a flat rate of 30% on millionaires will generate 4-5 billion a year.
Obamacare alone will add 1.75 trillion in federal expenditures through 2022. The tax on the wealthy won’t even cover the deficit for last year, so how in the heck is it going to rebuild the economy?
Our government has to quit spending money like it grows on trees and start paring down on entitlements. The american dream is still here but, hello, you have to WORK for it – not hold your hand out.

HAHA just who do you think is paying for Obama’s princess for a week of spring break in Mexico with 12 friends and 25 secret service man–US taxpayers! What do you expect from a narcissist . Raise the taxes on everyone so the royal family can continue for the next four years abusing the hell out of it. After you vote for him don’t forget to line up for the KoolAid. Read this article below:

After driving the U.S. more deeply into debt than any other President, if George Bush’s daughters had done this, it would be all over the news and the liberals would be calling for his head.
Want to know where Obama’s 13 year-old daughter is right now with 12 friends?
On “spring break” in Oaxaca Mexico, on your dime.
She took two jets and 25 secret service men.
    A thirteen year-old?
Why haven’t you heard about it?
The Obama Administration has had the Secret Service scouring the web ordering that any website mentioning this be taken down because letting the travel plans out could endanger the president’s daughter’s security.
Nonsense, the “royal couple” just want to hide the way they are ripping off the U. S. taxpayer. Only a few Canadian Web-sites still have it up. (both below)
The Obama’s are laughing at the “suckers” who are funding their Imperial Lifestyle.
This trip will cost more than most Americans make in their entire lifetimes.

Get real, the rich own this country and sit back and laugh as we fight each other.
But go on, keep supporting their interests. This will be a thrid world country in no time!

  8. Breezy says:

Yep…and Obama will be the head leader of it all! Just keep letting all the illegals in and then give them amnesty…third are right but you are blaming the ones who want to limit the government and their spending. They are spending like drunks who have been on a private island for twenty years and then want to pin the cost on the ones who are fiscally responsible to begin with…not to mention the ones who actually provide jobs without the payroll coming out of tax payer dollars. The only jobs the Obama administration has created are ones that come out of tax dollars but go ahead and drink the Kool aid and actually believe that taxing the 1% is going to recover the economy. It won’t and that will be proven in the future but then everyone can just blame it on the rich not the narcissist we have running this country.

And yes I voted for him last time…BUT I certainly won’t make that mistake again!! A great orator can hide narcissism quite well….scary!
