PHOTO: Des Moines Animal Control Officer Helps Some Ducklings

You know your animals are in good hands when this kind of thing happens – Des Moines Master Animal Control Officer Jan Magnuson was driving by the Green River Thursday, when she happened upon a Momma duck and her dozen ducklings who were trying to get over the sandbags to the river, but were unable to:

“I stopped my truck in the middle of Russell Road with all my lights on, and was able to scoop up all twelve babies and put them on the river side of the sandbags,” Magnuson said. “And momma duck flew over to them and off they waddled!”

Jan added:

“Have a great day enjoying weather only a duck could love!”

Everyone here at The Waterland Blog loves stories like this – way to go Jan!

I believe Jan was also involved in a “duck rescue” back in the early 90’s. I remember a headline on the Highline News that was something like “Mom and 20 children rescued”. My response was “what?!!” I read the article and Jan had come to the resue of a LARGE family of ducks that was up at 216th & Pacific Hwy S. They were all rounded up and safely taken to the Marina. Jan to the rescue!
