7:10 p.m.: The Pete’s Towing multiple tow truck chain:

7:08 p.m.: A member of the Daughters of Royalty Drill Team does the splits:

6:58 p.m.: Loud explosions were the first clue that some scurvy dogs were nearing – the Seafair Pirates are here, and it appears the Moby Duck has been repaired! (we’ll be hanging out with them soon…):

6:49 p.m.: A Seafair Clown plays the Ukelele like only a smiling clown can:

6:33 p.m.: Janel Stoneback (left) and Lisa Meinecke of the Des Moines Rotary do a dance to promote the upcoming Blues and Brews Festival, to be held Aug. 25 at Des Moines Beach Park (more info here:

6:20 p.m.: He’s left his perch now, but this guy at 21938 Marine View Drive had perhaps the best view of the parade (look closely at the chimney on the roof):

6:14 p.m. Susan Goegebuer of the Des Moines Rotary rushes off the Grandstand to donate to the Des Moines Area Food Bank’s “Parade Against Hunger”:

6:03 p.m.: A cool old firetruck, built in 1941, kicks off the Children’s Parade as the Judges look on:

6 p.m.: The Parade has started, and look who we found in the VIP section – Rep. Dave Upthegrove (D) of the 33rd Legislative District:

5:43 p.m.: Waterland Parade Judges are all set in the oven-like Grandstand Trailer, located on Marine View Drive near 220th:

5:25 p.m.: You can always tell when a parade is about to start when you see the Vendors start roaming…

4:45 p.m.: Police are closing off Marine View Drive in preparations for the parade. It’s like a peaceful ghost-town now, with no traffic.

4:30 p.m.: The Moby Duck, overflowing with crazy Seafair Pirates, drove south down Marine View Drive towards the Yardarm Pub staging area. We have it on good authority that they’ll be partying at the All Star Sports Bar after the parade. This is always a lot of fun (they have to sing for their drinks, they kiss girls and give out stickers) so be sure to try and get there around 7 p.m. All Star is located at 22303 Marine View Drive South.

4:30 p.m.: Here’s a behind-the-scenes pic of the awards that are waiting to be given out tonight, in boxes inside the Grandstand Trailer:
