Highline College’s MaST Center will be at Des Moines Farmers Market Saturday
The Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market is once again happy to partner with Highline College’s MaST Center the fourth Saturday of the month throughout the season – which means their information booth with the sea creature touchy-feely tank will be there this Saturday, July 28!
The Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Center is the marine laboratory for Highline Community College. MaST is dedicated to expanding knowledge about the Puget Sound and the surrounding environment through teaching, outreach, and research.
Located four miles south of campus at Redondo Beach – halfway between Seattle and Tacoma – with easy access to a huge diversity of nearby habitats, MaST’s 2,500 square-foot facility offers public space, classroom, laboratories, office and research areas with state-of-the-art equipment 3,000 gallons of flow-through saltwater tanks, with over 100 species of local marine life.
Water Weekends allow the local community to interact with the underwater communities of the Puget Sound. Visitors can “see” and “touch” animals from Puget Sound in their 11 large flow-through tanks. The MaST Center is open every Saturday from 10:00AM to 2:00PM free to the general public.
Summer on the Sound
This is a week long, half day camp that will focus on marine life in Puget Sound (sorry, it’s all full!). Running the week of July 30th-August 3rd, from 8a.m. to noon and timed with some of the lowest tides of the years, students will find themselves immersed in the study of the ocean and the beaches. If you are a student entering 4th, 5th, or 6th grade and are passionate about science and the ocean, then this is the experience of a lifetime.
