PHOTOS: Scenes from Saturday’s Des Moines Farmers Market Chili Cook-Off

The Des Moines Farmers Market closed its season Saturday with its annual Chili Cook-Off fundraiser, and despite drizzly skies there was quite a happy crowd on hand.

Judged by Mayor Dave Kaplan, Police Chief George Delgado, Karen Kinney of the Washington State Farmers Market Association, Ric Jacobson of Corky Cellars, along with The Waterland Blog’s own Michael Brunk, the winners were:

  1. Chili Con Cronies
  2. Pepper Chili Chicks
  3. Chili Sisters

The People’s Choice Award went to “Nutting But the Best,” Justin Nutting’s team.

Here are some pics from the event; notice how many smiling, laughing faces there were – at least by the tasters and winners (can you guess whose team lost?)  – as shot by Scott Schaefer, with photos of the top three winners by Michael Brunk (click images to see larger versions/slideshow):

What a great way to end an incredible year at the Des Moines Farmers Market!

The cook off was a great success. However, the market was a bust since everyone went for the chili and all but passed the market vendors.
Then there was the constant rain.
It was unfortunate for the vendors that braved the weather for them to make enough sales to pay the tent fee seemed to be the goal for the day.
A sad ending for such a great market.

Greg, The vendors actually did quite well and were all very happy. Those that braved the day anyways. The cook off is scheduled for the last day for this specific reason. It helps to bring more shoppers out. Sorry you missed the last day and it’s benefits. See you next season

    • Jeanie Blacksher says:

Perhaps we should have the chili cook-off earlier in the season?!

I went down to the Federal Way farmer’s market after leaving Des Moines, and it was already closed. The chilly, wet weather is what diminished the shopping crowd; the cook-off was a great way to tempt people out into the weather. I love the Des Moines farmer’s market, and greatly appreciate the vendors that brave any kind of weather to share their goods. Now for seven months without…!

Great day today dispite the weather! Thank you all for making this 6th year a success. See you all in the spring.

chili there, by far ~ SO VERY YUMMY! (sorry, Lisa!)

And, we did purchase veggies from one of the market vendors as well 🙂
