‘Vehicular Assault’ Collision in Des Moines Sends Five to Hospital Saturday

A speeding vehicle driven by a 19-year old man crashed into a car in Des Moines on Saturday, Nov. 10, sending all the passengers to local hospitals, and causing life-threatening injuries to the 25-year old female driver.

The 25-year old driver was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with potential life threatening injuries, along with two occupants – a 14-year old male and 14-year old female – with very serious injuries.

Two other occupants of the victim’s vehicle were transported to St. Francis Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Des Moines Police say that around 3 p.m. on Saturday they responded to the two-vehicle collision which occurred in the intersection of S. 240 Street and 20th Ave South.

Investigators at the scene have determined the at-fault vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed traveling southbound on 20th Ave South, failed to stop for a stop sign, and struck the victim’s vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on S 240th Street.

The 19-year old male at fault driver was transported to Highline Medical Center where he was treated and released into police custody. He was booked into SCORE Jail for Investigation of four (4) counts of vehicular assault pending further investigation.

The four other occupants of the at fault vehicle were not injured and are cooperating with the investigators.

20th Ave S is a drag strip. Straight & flat, people speed up and down it all day and all night.
Numerous complaints have been fumed with city officials and they have taken no action to reduce speeds on this street, and sadly a tragedy has occurred. Hopefully they will now take action to prevent further incidents.

We have made complaints to the Des Moines Police Department about the compound and the end of our street on 20th Ave S. No action has been made and I can not even let my kids enjoy riding their bikes because of the way they drive through this neighborhood like they are drag racing.
I will contact Des Moines city officials and hopefully now something will be done.

I agree. But 240th is also a drag strip. I’m always afraid when turning left off of 20th onto 240th. It’s a VERY dangerous intersection and something needs to be done. This accident was inevitable.

Actually they are holding off on pulling the plug for another 48 hours. My fiance has been with the family the last 2 days. She just celebrated her 25th birthday on Friday.

I hope that the D.A.will change the charges from vehicular assault to homoside, and the defendant to be remanded, and given the death penalty when finally sentenced, then people might take driving responsibly seriously.Oh wait i’m in western Washington, that means he will be out in three months.Do five hours community service, and ordered not to do it again. Only so he can do it again and again

    So sad. :(

And its even worse that this is something that should have been prevented or at least deterred a few years ago…..

And as they speed up and down 20th Ave yet still tonight…it could happen again tommorow.

When will this reported problem be fixed?

Will the DA charge him with homocide?i think that they should and sentence him to death by leathal injection. Then mabey people would take driving responsibly serious,or face up to it.And the DOL stop handing out drivers licences just because they can pass atest a monkey can.but in reality this is western Washington, wher he will most likley get 3months home confinement,5hrs community service, ordered by the judge
“not to do it again or else”
Just so he can and WILL do it,or most likley worst again.
