Shop Local & Help Des Moines Businesses with the Brand New ‘Waterland Card’!

The City of Des Moines, along with the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce, Destination Des Moines, and Highline Community College StartZone, have partnered together to create a new “Shop Waterland” campaign, aimed at helping local businesses.

“In these challenging economic times, Des Moines stands behind our local businesses, to help our community survive and thrive,” reads an announcement. “We regularly promote shopping and dining in Des Moines, but we want to take this effort to the next level, and we need your participation to do so.”

Over 80,000 Waterland Cards will be distributed through publications (including The Waterland Blog), along with participating public and business venues such as the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market. Local businesses may distribute them as well, and the card will be available digitally with a smart phone ‘QR’ code.

For local businesses to participate, all you have to do is offer a discount or special deal available for customers who use the new “Waterland Card.” You can display a Shop Waterland decal or poster in the window of your store (posters are downloadable at By posting the decal or poster, you are committing to offering your customers a discount or special offer which you can define yourself and vary as you would like. If you choose to participate, please send an e-mail to [email protected] or call 206-870-6725 so you can be added to the list of participating businesses, which is also periodically publicized (at no cost to your business).

The campaign is planned to continue indefinitely.

The announcement continues:

Why promote shopping locally? As our businesses know, when residents and visitors shop locally, they: sustain local jobs and help businesses employ local family, friends and neighbors; help maintain strong and diverse neighborhoods; reduce energy consumption and costs, traffic congestion, pollution and travel time; provide businesses with revenue to be able to reinvest profits in local nonprofit organizations; and support local government services like public safety and parks.

It’s that simple! Whether or not your business has a product or service to offer through the Waterland Card program, please encourage your employees to buy locally!

Thank you for your consideration and please, Shop Waterland!

Lynn Wallace, President/CEO, SWKC Chamber of Commerce

How do we get the Waterland card? I’m a resident of Des Moines and I haven’t seen this card before.

  3. Pat Nardo says:

Many businesses in Des Moines will provide you with a card if you ask. I will be at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday and will have a handful of them with me. I will be wearing my Korea Veteran Cap and you will be able to see over me. Help me to love Des Moines!

We have not kept score but are trying to eat out more often to help. Scotch and Vine, Prima Margheritia, Wally’s, Mandarin Kitchen, Des Moines Creek Restaurant, Athens Pasta and Pizza, and what about you out there? Des Moines needs more patronage. Not only places to eat, but we have a book store, yarn shop, two flower shops, and a beautiful marina to while way some precious moments. A fully stocked cocktail lounge at Anthony’s invites you to all that may quench your thirst, along with small snacks if desired. Don’t forget Salty’s at Redondo. If this all sounds like a vacation resort…come and try this very friendly place and it will become your habit!
