In December, Des Moines Waterfront Famers Market board president Wayne Corey and manager Rikki Marhol put on a webinar for the Farmers Market Coalition, a national organization that seeks to strengthen farmers markets’ capacity to serve farmers, consumers, and communities by providing the rapidly growing movement with information, tools, and representation at state and federal levels. They help build networks, link peers, inspire leadership, and connect farmers markets old and new with resources for success. Their PowerPoint presentation focused on helping small markets raise funds thru avenues that go beyond special events. In other words, most markets need to fundraise 12 months out of the year to make ends meet. During the webcast up to 80 markets nationwide participated. For their efforts, the Coalition made a nice donation to the Market’s Endowment Fund.Farmers Market Coaltion Logo And just this month, a national magazine – Farmers Market Today – featured the artwork of local artist Jenney Elliott on its cover. The artwork was the basis of last season’s poster that became a collector’s item. An article inside the magazine noted the market’s move to its new location on the waterfront at the Des Moines Marina. And, to top it off, the Washington State Farmers Market Association had Wayne and Rikki repeat the fund raiser presentation at the state conference in Vancouver, Washington in January. Wayne added:

“We are really rock’n and are working vigorously putting together another outstanding market for our upcoming season starting June 1st. Coming back will be everyone’s favorite vendors, food and music plus some exciting new ones.”
