Two young girls injured in hit and run in Des Moines Friday evening

Two young girls – ages 8 and 12 – were injured Friday, July 5, around 7:15 p.m. in a hit and run collision in the 25700 block of 16 Ave South (map below).

Witnesses said a 2012 Nissan Murano traveling southbound on 16th Ave at a high rate of speed struck a parked vehicle, then hit the two girls who were walking on the shoulder of the roadway.

The driver fled the scene without stopping.

Witnesses were able to provide the license plate of the vehicle that fled the scene. The vehicle was registered to a Federal Way address. At the request of the Des Moines Police Department, officers from the Federal Way Police Department went to the address. They located the vehicle that fled the scene and arrested the driver. Officers from the Des Moines Police Department took custody of the 52-year old male suspect. It does not appear that drugs or alcohol were involved. The fleeing vehicle was impounded and will be held pending a search warrant. The driver will be booked on felony Hit and Run charges at the SCORE Correctional Facility and the transferred to the King County Jail.

The two girls that were hit received non-life threatening injuries, and were transported by ambulance to Valley Regional Medical Center.

At last report, the girls suffered scrapes and bruises but are undergoing additional tests to rule out any more serious injuries.
