Prima Margherita Brings Pizza with Passion to Des Moines

Owner Vincenzo Magliuolo hails from the seaside town of Pozzuoli on the bay of Naples, where he grew up as the fourth generation of a venerable family of restauranteurs. His maternal grandfather and family have always been in the restaurant business. It was there that Vincenzo’s mother and his uncle Peppe (who has several successful restaurants in the area), “grew up in the restaurant” as Vincenzo says, adding “it’s really in our blood. I have a passion for cooking. Now, at Prima Margherita I am following my passion and my dream.”

Vincenzo’s passion is evident as he describes the style of cooking that is delighting lucky Des Moines patrons. “These are simple recipes, made with imported ingredients and fresh local produce, imported extra virgin olive oil-no butter. I have a customer that loves clams. She didn’t believe me when I told her there is no butter. So I showed her in the kitchen!”

The star attraction pizza is made the traditional Neapolitan way, using only imported flour, water and fresh yeast for the dough. Personal 10” pizza hand tossed and baked in our wood fired oven giving the pizza a delicate, thin crust. Deliziosa! Additionally menu choices include fresh salads, delectable entrees, and desserts imported from Italy.

You can also enjoy offerings from the full bar, including signature cocktails with romantic names like “Capri Dreams”, inspired by the blue of the famous Blue Grotta in Capri or the “Positano” with a subtle green hue. Happy hour specials starting at $3.00 for domestic beers and a delicious array of appetizers are available from 3-6 p.m. daily.

As Vincenzo says, “I wanted to bring the real atmosphere of a Neapolitan Pizzeria, or “Trattoria” to Des Moines.     Growing up in Boston’s “Little Italy” my taste for Italian food became sharp and I am really particular, not easy to please when it comes to restaurant food, especially Italian. We have been to Prima Margherita dozens of times now and I am unable to find fault with anything. Ambiences, food offerings, service, presentation. variety of entrees, all are appealing and worth trying. What else is fine here is that you are not a customer or a client or even a visitor; you are family! This is what we were accustomed to in East Boston, where I swear, there were Italian Restaurants every hundred yards. Santarpio’s was the place to find the very best pizza though and they are still going strong. Now we have a new favorite in Des Moines and it is this Prima Margherita. As my cousin in Palermiti would invite, Alora mangiamo! C’mon, let’s eat! Just writing this makes me hungry for next visit …soon. Thank you Vincenzo, mollo bene grazi!
