EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The Waterland Blog nor its staff:]

Dear Editor: Every so often our council does something that is truly good for the community; especially when it has to do with business perpetuation. For many years now, we have had a maritime community spirit but not much maritime activity that could be shared by the average “man on the street”. That is, until now! Our Mayor and Mayor pro tem have invited a small business to venture into Des Moines at Redondo for starters; it is a Kayak and Paddle boat rental from Gig Harbor, just across from us, where they do a thriving business. The operator has set up his sea craft for rental and they are trying to establish an expansion here in Des Moines. Whether it is successful or not depends on you, and I, and anyone who lives in Des Moines who would like to see more tourists attracted to bring revenue into our sagging city coffers. There can be, even, races that bring crowds to watch and spend a dollar or two here if we concentrate on advertising to any interested “seafarers” who love the tiny craft and the joy of paddling about on our smooth, inviting waters. Even if you, dear reader, are not interested or able to participate, you/we can let some who may be, informed of this new attraction and remember to thank our Council leaders for their imagination and foresight. Happy Paddling! – Pat Nardo

    1. Mr. Wanker; Thank you for yo interest and here is what you should know: Please head down to Redondo and just immediately south of Salty’s (and good food) you will find my friend Lee or Loren waiting for you to arrive and get your feet wet.. If you have as much fun as the people in Gig Harbor…spread the word.
Later, he plans to have canoes and maybe even a Boston Whaler.. Tell us of your experience. They have life vests also so you need not bring one of your own.
Oh, the rates is $10.00 for one hour if you can last that long…Have fun!!

  1. Give it some time for people to realize that you’re down near Salty’s. It would help if it weren’t raining right now. I’m interested and I just read this article.

    1. What are the hours? Monday through Saturday? We need some details here, please. $10 an hour for both the paddle boat and the kayak?

  3. Madam Lady; Our friend, Lee Sup is not going to be in full swing this year as I have come to understand but he is evaluating how and when to get up “steam”. He told me he would be here next Saturday. He charges $10.00/hourly for a Kayak rental and that includes a paddle or two along with a life vest. Ditto the paddle board, which looks scary to me. I think you need to wear wet pants to drive one of those.
Would you and some friends be interested in a Kayak race or cruise from Redondo to the Des Moines Marina and back? Let’s t get some friends interested in promoting this business…together.
You should know it is not fun to sit all day with no customers as happened last weekend.

    1. Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is a lot of fun. I have only done it once, and it was a little scary for the first 10-15 minutes until you get your balance. You don’t need to wear a wetsuit. most the people I saw doing it were in their bathing suits. While it’s getting a little chilly if you fall in. During the summer, you get pretty warm from paddling that a dip is often welcome.
