Advertiser Fernwood at the Park will be holding a presentation by the AARP Fraud Fighters called “How to protect yourself and your money from $chemes and $cams” on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m.
“Each year Americans lose more than $40 billion to telephone, mail and Internet fraud,” reads an announcement. “The con artists are clever and creative in the variety of scams they use to trick us into giving them what they want. They offer phony Jamaican lottery prizes, charities or investment scams. They scare us into thinking our children or grandchildren are in danger and need cash. Acquaintances pretend to be our friends while they rob us of our life’s savings. Sometimes they steal our identity outright – and ruin our credit and good names overnight.
“Unfortunately for many, financial abuse can be more than just ‘stranger danger.’ Culprits can include family members or trusted confidantes. Property and assets are sometimes used for another person’s gain.”
