Highline College Students will host Fundraiser for Hungry Children

A Group of Highline Community College students will be organizing a ‘Change for Change’ fundraiser for the Des Moines Area Food Bank’s Weekend Backpack Program.

The Fundraiser will consist of a forum on Nov. 25 and a bake sale on Dec. 2.

The backpack program, a partnership between the Des Moines Area Food Bank and the Highline School District, provides food to children at risk of hunger over the weekends. The food bank currently serves over 350 backpacks per weekend through four local elementary schools. With this program, backpacks are filled with six kid-friendly meals and delivered to the schools to be checked-out on Fridays and returned by the students on Monday.

The Change for Change fundraiser is an annual event at Highline that is focused on raising money to make change in the community.

The Highline students will host a forum on the Highline campus on Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. in Building 7. Students will give a presentation on the backpack program at the forum, which will also include representatives from the food bank and the Highline School District.

The Highline students will also be having a bake sale on Dec. 2 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second floor of the Student Union, Building 8. The students will be selling baked goods with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the food bank. They will also be taking donations.

Highline is located at 2400 S. 240th Street in Des Moines.
