Highline College Students holding forum/fundraiser on local hunger

Students from State & Local Government, Political Science 150, at Highline College will be putting on two events in the next week in support of the Weekend Backpack Program:

  • Monday, Nov. 25: a forum on the problem and on the backpack program at 10 a.m. in Building 7. Please join us. Donations will be accepted.
  • Monday, Dec. 2: a Bake Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union, near the bookstore, with all proceeds going to the backpack program. No donation is too small.

This program provides backpacks full of food for low-income children in four local elementary schools. It is operated by the Des Moines Area Food Bank in cooperation with the Highline School District, where 70 percent of the students qualify for free- and reduced-price lunches.

For too many of the students, the food they get at school is all they have to eat. Hence the backpacks. A donation of $5 feeds a child for a weekend.

If you can’t eat, you can’t concentrate.  If you can’t concentrate, you can’t learn.  If you can’t learn, you will always be poor.  This is not what any of us wants for our community.

Donations of home-baked goods for the sale as well as cash are welcome.  Two years ago we were able to raise $1,100; last year the students raised $1,200.

Cash donations (checks) can also be mailed to :
