City Council votes to retain Destination Des Moines for 2014 Waterland Events

At Thursday night’s (Dec. 12) meeting, the Des Moines City Council voted to continue utilizing Destination Des Moines as the organization that manages and promotes the Waterland Festival and Parade.

The Waterland Parade and Festival are Seafair-sanctioned events that bring great joy to the community.

In 2014, the Waterland Festival will be expanded to three days, beginning Friday, July 18 and concluding at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 20. Featured Events events will include the Children’s Parade, the Grande Parade, a Children’s Carnival, Old Fashioned Picnic and Ice Cream Social, the Waterland 5k Run, the Annual Des Moines Classic Car and Wooden Boat Show, A Taste of Des Moines, Softball Games and a Dart Tournament.

Founded in 2006,, Destination Des Moines produces year-round community events, including the Holiday Christmas Tree Lighting, Fireworks Over Des Moines, and the Destination Des Moines Trick-or-Treat Path.

    While it may not be the Waterland festival of the past (I moved here too late to experience it), I am excited for the increased community activity. I wouldn’t’t mind my tax dollars being used to promote the events either.
