Vehicular Homicide suspect changes plea in 2012 high speed crash

On Tuesday (Feb. 25), Yichun Xu changed his plea to ‘Guilty’ to charges of vehicular homicide, as well as three counts of reckless endangerment for a Nov. 10, 2012 collision in Des Moines that killed Brenda Gomez-Zapata, 25, and injured three others.

Xu, 19 at the time, drove his newly-purchased Mercedes-Benz through a stop sign on 20th Ave S. at S. 240th Street at a high rate of speed and collided with a car driven by Gomez, who died from her injuries on Nov. 19, 2012.

He faces 15 months in prison when he is sentenced March 7.

He was released from jail last March after his mother paid his $2 million bail, and recently turned himself in to police.

Xu, from China, had been in the U.S. for two months at the time of the collision.

The collision seriously injured three family members who were passengers in Gomez’s car. Passengers in the defendant’s car received minor injuries.
