LETTER: Mt. Rainier High Choir still needs $1800 for Carnegie Hall trip

[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The Waterland Blog nor its staff:]

The Mt. Rainier High School Choir is one of only ten choirs in the nation invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City this April 13, 2014.

We are bursting with pride with the honor!

The enormous and very real challenge is financing a trip at a socio-economically diverse school in which nearly 50% of the students are eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch. For many students who have dedicated hours to the choir, a chance to travel to the Big Apple is not financially viable. The opportunity to grace the world renowned stage at Carnegie Hall will leave a lasting impression on these students: Anything is possible with the right frame of mind, heart, and a little luck.

There are 71 students between the three choirs that have committed to this trip, and it is our goal to help everyone get there! The cost is $1,610 per person. For each student, including the cost of chaperones (10), the total trip will be approximately $130,000. With this letter, we are giving you the opportunity to support students at Mount Rainier who work hard every day and wish to share their gift with thousands on a New York Stage.

Students and volunteers are enthusiastically fundraising to support all eligible choir members, regardless of their family’s ability to afford the cost, but this has not come easy. We are facing difficult challenges in meeting our fundraising goal to support everyone’s expenses. We have mobilized our parent body, student base, and community businesses. We have adopted the motto: One Choir, One Voice.

Our major fundraiser, a dinner/concert/dessert auction last Friday 2/28/14 successfully raised over $7000! Our combined fundraisers for the month of February raised over $11,000. We have done amazing things in a very short time. Now the bills for the trip are due since we are leaving soon, our performance is April 13th, 2014. The reality is we are only short $1800 for at kids identified as at risk but we are worried some families that said they could contribute to their student’s full trip may fall short. It’s going to be a fabulous trip. We are committed to not stop fundraising until all our bills are paid. That’s where you come in.
