The Heroes of Conservation Awards gala is taking place Sept. 17, and Des Moines’ own Dr. John Muramatsu has been nominated for the coveted “Hero of the Year” award. Field & Stream magazine, in partnership with Toyota, “scoured the nation for local heroes and John is one of only six chosen,” according to an announcement. Each of the honorees will receive a $5,000 grant, but only one will be presented with a brand new truck. “The awards celebrate every day heroes who are leading the charge of change with their passion and dedication to protecting fish and wildlife habitat across the country.” Dr. Muramatsu first grabbed the attention of conservation leaders after working on local coho salmon stream restoration projects for the past 21 years and by helping to introduce children to conservation work. At this year’s gala, Dr. Muramatsu, along with five other nominees, will be recognized for their outstanding work and presented with a $5,000 grant. One of the six will be named the Conservation Hero of the Year, and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., the exclusive sponsor of the program since its inception, will award the winner a brand new Toyota Tundra. Videos documenting the work of each of the finalists are being showcased on fieldandstream.com, with new videos being posted each week from now until the gala.]]>
