Sign up for Mt. Rainier Pool’s ‘Pumpkin Plunge’ at Farmers Market Saturday

Registrations for Mount Rainier Pool’s first-ever Pumpkin Plunge will be available at Kids Day at the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market this Saturday, Sept. 13.

Instead of braving rainy or chilly weather to pick out their perfect pumpkin for Halloween, kids can jump into the Mount Rainier Pool on Sunday, Oct. 26 to “rescue” their future jack-o-lantern. They will then have the option of decorating their orbs at designated painting stations, or they can cart them home to be carved.

“The reaction from the kids when they suddenly see pumpkins dumped into the pool is priceless,” said Pool District President Gene Achziger. “I think the parents are almost going to get as big a kick out of it when they see the glee on their kids’ faces. Parents, make sure to bring your cameras.”

Halloween goodie bags will also be distributed and other activities are planned for the two sessions: one at 1 p.m. and the second at 3 p.m.

“It will be on a Sunday, but we’ve strategically scheduled the event to avoid conflicting with the Seahawks game,” Achziger said.

Seattle will be on the East Coast for a 10 a.m. game against the Carolina Panthers.

Cost of admission to the Plunge is $5 per person, including parents who might want to accompany smaller children in the pool. There will also be a shallow pool on deck for younger children to pick a pumpkin.

In order to assure enough pumpkins are available, participants are required to pre-register either at the pool or this weekend at the Farmers Market.

All proceeds will go to the Faith Callahan Memorial Swim Lesson Scholarship Fund to assist low-income children to learn to swim.
