Landslide damages four homes near Saltwater State Park in Des Moines Friday


A landslide hit just north of Saltwater State Park in Des Moines Friday afternoon (March 27), damaging four homes.

There were no injuries or road closures, according to South King Fire & Rescue.

A back deck from one of the damaged homes apparently slid down a hill, and trees had fallen down to the beach.

Engineers and firefighters were on the scene.

    I noticed in some of the stills on Komo’s website that there was white irrigation pipe in the section that sheared away. Irrigating the edge of a bluff is not a good idea, for the record.

      Good point Greg. I didn’t see that on the photo. Improper Irrigation is actually what caused a slide in Des Moines last year. Plus the hills above Saltwater Park are mostly sand. Those homes were built before city codes required water to be controlled by sump pumps.

    Well if Des Moines would have allowed the homeowner to maintain their property by keeping the trees trimmed this wouldn’t have happened. The weight of those trees pulled down the slope.
