Online ‘date’ goes bad, ends up in shooting and carjacking early Monday

UPDATE: This post was updated with corrected location information on May 17, 2016:

The Des Moines Police Department is reporting that an online “date” went bad early Monday morning (May 16), resulting in a shooting and carjacking near S. 244th Street and 25th Ave S. near Highline College (map below).

Police say they were called around 1 a.m. Monday morning, and learned that a male shooting victim had apparently arranged to meet a woman at the intersection. The victim asked for help from his cousin, an Uber driver, and the two arrived with a friend.

DMPD Sgt. Doug Jenkins told The Waterland Blog that when they arrived, a man jumped out of some nearby bushes, shouted “give me everything you’ve got,” then shot the victim in the chest after being told that he didn’t have anything.

The suspect then stole the car belonging to the Uber-driving cousin.

The woman also fled, either on foot or in the stolen vehicle.

The male shooting victim was taken with life-threatening injuries to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he underwent surgery around 4:30 a.m.

He is expected to survive.

Police are still looking for the suspects.

The stolen car is a 2013 four-door Chevrolet Malibu with temporary plates.

Police described the shooting suspect as possibly a black male in his late teens. The woman with him was described only as in her early 20s.

  1. Gregory says:

Address is more like Kent- Des Moines road and 25th ave s.
Doesn’t look like any E-Harmony date hookup.
More like a Craigslist hooker date call.
He gave the shooters plenty of time to plan a ambush on arrival.
He didn’t Deserve to be shot though.

I think Waterland Blog needs to do some fact checking. Crime happened at S 244th St & 25th Ave S near Highline College. Not 224th Street as reported above.
