Sound of gunshot puts Highline College into ‘Shelter-in-Place’ mode Tuesday

Late Tuesday afternoon (June 21), Highline College was put into emergency ‘Shelter-in-Place’ status as a response to what sounded like a single gunshot being fired in/from the northwest part of the campus.

The following alert was issued:

“General Alert-All Campus

Attention: An emergency condition exists on campus. This is not a drill. Remain in shelter-in-Place status until the all-clear.

Standby for further instructions. You will be notified if further action is required.”

Later, authorities said that Highline administrators received a report of what sounded like a single gunshot coming from the northwest part of campus, near Highline’s north parking lot.

The campus went into a shelter-in-place while the gunshot was investigated.

The Des Moines Police Department responded to the report and did not see any evidence of gunfire, and the shelter-in-place lasted from 3:52 p.m. until 4:18 p.m.

Highline College is located at 2400 S 240th Street in Des Moines.
