A 40-foot wooden cabin cruiser docking at the Des Moines Marina fuel dock experienced a dramatic engine fire Thursday morning, June 30.

The boat owner – who was not injured – tried to extinguish the blaze with his fire extinguisher, but it continued to grow.

South King Fire & Rescue arrived on scene and extinguished the blaze, utilizing both their marine unit and hand-lines from the dock.

There was minimal fuel spilled, which was contained within a boom which was quickly deployed.

After the fire was completely extinguished, water was pumped from the vessel and the marina boat lift was used to remove the burned boat from the water.

“The take-away was that everything worked as it should,” authorities said, “but always have a fire extinguisher, life jackets and a cell phone when out on the water.”
