Wanolitto’s Musings for this Saturday’s Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market

Last Saturday was another record day for the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market on the Waterland Festival weekend!

Every booth space was filled and even though it was cloudy most of the day, shoppers enjoyed being able to browse thru the Clutter 2 Cash sale. Clutter vendors reported their best ones yet. The next and last sale of the season will be August 13th. Pick up application at the info booth or click for a application.

DMFM_sunsetlogo whiteThe Sunset Markets on Wednesdays are also seeing record crowds this season. Come by for something completely different and enjoy the free music in the park after you shop and visit the great fix ‘ins at the food trucks.

New this season:

Soggy DoggyWhile you’re stopping by to taste the markets wines, be sure to pick up some homemade free dog biscuits for your best friend. They are compliments of the Soggy Doggy stores in our area. Washing your dog in your bathroom is painful to your knees and back. Finding dog hair in your bathroom a week after you’ve washed your dog is not funny. Chasing/wrestling your pet in the back yard with a garden hose is no picnic either. Now you can wash your pet using their professional shampoos, conditioners, blow dryers and colognes. All this and they clean up the mess! You can also have them do the washing.

Fresh eggs are back at the market. Top Market Trading & Farm are bringing their eggs to both the Wednesday & Saturday markets.

Kiss My Grits2New food truck this year is Kiss My Grits. They are about bringing the low country cuisine to Seattle and paring it with this region’s incredible produce and seafood. The mission of Kiss My Grits is to provide the highest quality food using the best local and seasonal ingredients wherever possible, while exceeding people’s expectations for taste, value, and service.

Market sponsor, Law Offices of Gehrke, Baker, Doull & Kelly donated their booth space this week to Friend to Friend America which recruits and matches volunteers to visit (one-to-one) with elderly and disabled persons who live in nursing homes, assisted living and retirement homes. The volunteer friends make a commitment to visit at least twice a month at their convenience, for a minimum of one year. Anyone may volunteer.

Market sponsor Saltwater Church is raising funds for mosquito nets in foreign countries that are affected by the Zika virus. Visit their booth and find out how you can help or join them on any Sunday morning at 10:30am. Visit them at Saltwater Church or on Facebook to find out more.

Music – Trumpet Camp (Kids playing) 10-12, Moe Ribbs 12-2pm

Food Trucks – Jemil’s, Kiss My Grits, Mini the Dough-Nut, Nibbles, Sweet Bumpas, & Wicked Pies

Office ChairWould you like to fill this chair? The market has an open Board seat. The market has nine volunteer positions on its board and meets once a month. If you would like to apply for this seat, please send an email to [email protected].

Attention seniors (55 and older), when you shop at the market, check in with the information both to see if you qualify for our Healthy Eating Initiative. Once you sign up you can receive a $10 voucher to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from our local farmers for every market day (Sat & Wed) throughout the season.

Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 11.53.34 AMThe other healthy eating initiative is for low income families called Fresh Bucks. Come to the market, swipe your EBT card and it will double your dollars (up to $10) per person. Both of these programs are good for Saturday and Wednesday markets.

Don’t forget The Des Moines Area Food Bank “Picnic in the Park” free summer lunch program for all school age kids. Look for them from noon to 1pm in the grassy area next to the marina office. And if you can’t wait until noon, they will serve free snacks from 10 to 10:30am. A child does not need to be a Highline Public School student to participate. They will be here every Saturday until school starts. If you would like to volunteer to help with this program, contact the Food Bank 206-878-2660.

The Wednesday night Sunset Markets are under way. They are every Wednesday in July and August from 4 to 8pm. There will be food trucks, farms and lots of goodies. Then you can stroll over to the Beach Park for the free music in the park series brought to you by the Des Moines Art Commission

Seniors, the market and the King Conservation District, with partner Sound Generations, are offering the HYDE Shuttle providing local door to door transportation to and from the market for seniors 55 and older and people with disabilities of all ages living in Des Moines, Normandy Park, Burien and Sea-Tac. Call 206-727-6262 to schedule a ride.
