Des Moines City Manager selection James Nichols withdraws application

James Nichols has informed Strategic Government Resources (SGR) that he is withdrawing as a candidate for the position of Des Moines City Manager.

As we previously reported, Nichols was unanimously selected by the Council for the position of City Manager at their July 28, 2016 meeting.

The hiring of Nichols was contingent upon successful negotiation of an employment contract, to be conducted by SGR. Nichols informed SGR that he was withdrawing his candidacy prior to any formal negotiations between the parties.

A specific reason for the withdrawal was not provided.

“The Des Moines City Council remains committed to finding an innovative, collaborative, and qualified leader for the City Manager position to help this rapidly developing community achieve its economic goals, while ensuring that the needs and expectations of its increasingly diverse citizenry are being met,” a statement reads.

SGR, the national search firm contracted by the City to provide a comprehensive scope of executive search services, will continue to assist the Council in the City Manager hiring process at no additional fee to the City. The City Council will consider all potential options and take any formal action at an open public meeting in accordance
