Wanolitto’s Musings for this Saturday’s Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market
With the season half over the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market is gearing up for the fall season and this means if you are a home canner, now is the time for you, as all the fruits and veggies are now plentiful!
There is an event change in our upcoming calendar; the Pancake Breakfast on Aug. 20 has been canceled. Check new calendar listings below.
OK bargain hunters this is your last chance to find that Treasure you were dreaming of, as this coming Saturday is the last Clutter 2 Cash event of this market season. All the booth spaces are full so you should find lots of great bargains. Look for the sale in the horseshoe parking lot in front of the Marina office. Happy Hunting!
Also this Saturday you will be able to give blood at the Bloodworks Northwest van at the North end of the market. The hours are 10am to 4pm (closed 12 to 1pm). There is an urgent appeal for blood and platelet donors as a shortage has developed in the Northwest.
The Rotary Club of Des Moines and Normandy Park has a booth every Saturday to promote their Annual Poverty Bay Blues and Brews Festival. The festival this year is on August 27th at the Beach Park. At the booth you can buy your discount tickets in advance ($30, $35 at the door). You can also enter a raffle for two Alaska Airline round trip tickets, cooking classes at Eat Local and season pass ($1,000) to Centerstage in Federal Way. The proceeds benefit the Highline Music 4 Life program which put instruments in the hands of kids who otherwise might not be able to afford them.
Market Sponsors – Wesley Homes
Music – NoteAbles (formerly Saltwater Saints)
Food Trucks – Jemil’s, Kiss My Grits, Mini the Dough-Nut, & Sweet Bumpas
Attention qualifying seniors (55 and older), have you picked up your free shopping bag when you shop at the market? Check in with the information both to see if you qualify for our Healthy Eating Initiative sponsored by KCD and the market. Once you sign up you can receive a $10 voucher to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from our local farmers for every market day (Sat & Wed) throughout the season.
The other healthy eating initiative is for low income families called Fresh Bucks. Come to the market, swipe your EBT card and it will double your dollars (up to $10) per person. This program is good for Saturday and Wednesday markets.
The Wednesday night Sunset Markets are under way. They are every Wednesday in July and August from 4 to 8pm. There will be food trucks, farms and lots of goodies. Then you can stroll over to the Beach Park for the free music in the park series brought to you by the Des Moines Art Commission.
