ELECTION 3: Looks like it’ll be Pina vs. Martinelli & Buxton vs. Steinmetz

The third round of results for Tuesday’s (Aug. 1) Primary Election were released at 4:02 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3, and with 25.17% counted, the standings in the race for Des Moines City Council remain the same.

The top two vote-getters for each non-partisan seat will move onto the Nov. 7 General Election.

  • Since there are only two candidates for Position No. 7, both Chad Harper and Matt Mahoney will automatically advance to the General Election – and that’s why they’re not listed.
  • Final results will be certified on Aug. 15, 2017.

Council Position No. 1:

  • Matt Pina*: 2,282 • 54.94%
  • Anthony Martinelli: 981 • 23.62%
  • Curtis Harmon: 869 • 20.92%
  • Write-in: 22 • 0.53%

Council Position No. 5:

  • Traci Buxton: 1,692 • 40.79%
  • Harry Steinmetz: 1,576 • 37.99%

martinelli has my support. he also has the support of everyone from the king county labor council to Harvard professor emeritus Dr. lester grinspoon.

    • BirchCreek says:

Dr. Lester Grinspoon? Who the heck is he? Unless he lives here, it doesn’t seem his opinion should matter in our local government.

      • slaughter says:

Maybe he doesn’t live in Des Moines but can clearly see the issue with a stagnant economy and how it hinders the growth of a city.
He may also be able to recognize the potential of the city under the right leadership. Kudos to outside support! Maybe the focus should be to draw more people into the city rather than keep “outsiders” away.
How is paid Marina parking and the Dollar Store working out for everyone???

      • Marty says:

um… he’s the founder of the harvard mental health letter! he’s brilliant.

martinelli also has endorsements from local groups such as the king county labor council and former local lawmakers like susan white who use to be on the des moines city council

        • BirchCreek says:

Grinspoon founder of a mental health newsletter? – not sure what I would think of that as being a positive endorsement.

          • Michelle says:

you’re not sure why an endorsement from a former harvard professor who founded a hugely respected mental health letter is positive? that’s odd…

Des Moines City Council Candidates for Position #04 Review to date:
Anomaly? Look to Des Moines candidates for pos. 07, with Chad Harper vs Matt Mahoney and you will see an unusual imbalance of magnificent proportions. Please absorb the following:
CHAD HARPER, 07, has raised $16,104.07, representing 114 contributions which comes from 99% of donors who do not even live in Des Moines! His campaign chest is a huge 27% of all funds raised by the 8 candidates for council.
Everyone may have supporters from out of town, of course, but there should be some limitations in the interest of our good government. Could this denote a possible and unhealthy interest in our community?
MATT MAHONEY, 07 with a healthy amount of $9,022.80 , which is 15% collected from 76 donations. These donations however are 62% from Des Moines residents ,or 47 from Des Moines and the remainder from out of Des Moines.
Now while there is no visible evidence of prominent support from within Des Moines for CHAD HARPER, here is what is standing in support of MATT MAHIONEY:
Des Moines Police Officers Guild – South King County Professional Firefighters
Central Puget Sound Carpenters Local 30 – Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market
Michael D Spear – Highline Public Schools Board Director
Matt Pina, Mayor, Dave Kaplan, Melissa Musser, Vic Pennington, M. Luisa Bangs, Rob Back, And Ed Pina – Former Des Moines City Councilmember,
Jeanette Burrage –Former Des Moines Councilmember
Bill and Patti Linscott –Des Moines Marina & Yacht Club
Roger and Linda Stull – Des Moines Business Owner
Jeff Green – Des Moines Business Owner
LaVonne and Truxton Terkla – Des Moines Business Owner
Tony Hettler – Des Moines Businessman

Correction to first sentence above; shoul d read position 07 review. Sadly I have no proof reader.

  4. Pat Nardo says:

Look closely at Position #01, Anthony Martinelli vs Matt Pina and you will quickly see that, while Mr. Maritnelli has earned no visible support, fund wise, or endorsements from any entity in Des Moines, relative excluded.
Mayor, Matt Pina has a well stocked campaign fund exceeding $10,000, 75% of which is derived from Citizens who live in Des Moines. My research is in progress on the many endorsements accumulated for Matt Pina. So we have Popularity, a great performance record in office as Mayor and Councilman, and still counting individual endorsements as I type. So, good luck Mr. Martinelli.

    • Michelle says:

of course he has more money… he’s the mayor… people are going to donate just to suck up.

plus he’s part of a dynasty family… ed pina was on the council before matt was.

  5. Barry Sellers says:

A vote for Harper or Martinelli is a vote for socialism.

    • Marty says:

socialism isn’t a bad thing… its why bernie sanders is so popular! but harper and martinelli are NOT socialists. I wish they were

    • Mysty Beal says:

Wow, Barry, I thought you were a great Resource Officer at Mt Rainier High, and also a great local police officer – had no idea you were a hard right Fox viewer. Had I known, I would have taken a pass on trying to get the Levy Lid passed to keep you employed a few years back – afterall, you would have viewed that as “socialist”. I guess it is only socialism when it helps someone other than you…

  6. Pat Nardo says:

Socialism, not bad? I was a soldier on occupation – duty World War Two and saw the “harvest” of Hitler’s socialism. Not a bad thing? A true scourge for human dignity. freedom and rights.

    • Marty says:

yes, because things such as making sure everyone has healthcare and access to college despite their income/class is a bad thing…

…time to get with the times!

but despite that… neither Harper or Martinelli have done or said anything to indicate they’re socialist, and saying so is just a weak attempt to smear them on something that isn’t even seen as a bad thing anymore

      • Barry Sellers says:

You might ask the people in Venezuela how they feel about socialism. Also, you think Bernie is so popular, if that were the case wouldn’t he be sitting in the White House right now?

        • Marty says:

Yeah, because one bad country is an example of why an entire political belief is bad. terrible logic and a complete fallacy

        • Michelle says:

“Also, you think Bernie is so popular, if that were the case wouldn’t he be sitting in the White House right now?”

so did you not follow the whole DNC scandal? he’s not president because the party screwed him over in favor of Hillary. if they wouldnt have he’d almost surely be president right now: every major poll had bernie winning a matchup against trump by double-digits.

he’s also likely runnign again in 2020, so he may be president in due time.

        • Mysty Beal says:

Nah, Bernie’s kids didn’t meet with Kremlin officials to help throw the race. You rant about socialism, but you’re willing to sell out this country to communist Russia. How is that OK with you?

    • Marty says:

also, attacking socialism because hitler was socialist is ridiculous and to be honest quite ignorant.

  7. Pat Nardo says:

Okay , all, listen to this; Traci Buxton needs more than flag wavers and kind, supporting words. Words alone won’t do what is needed to get Traci the seat that is best for us as future constituents. We need more endorsements, and a few more dollars as well. Whatever you can do for Traci Buxton endorsements , along with even small dollar amounts will be all that is needed. So much love shown by the flag wavers should never have been in vain. Yes, I have done my best but hope to set an example. Now; to your stationery and piggy banks.

    • Michelle says:

traci seems nice but doesn’t seem to have a grip on what it takes to be a councilor. when ive heard her give speeches she seems to wander off into the forest and forgets that she’s running for public office. steinmetz has his issues, but i think it would be a much quicker transition for him from now to becoming a quality lawmaker
