Reaching for the Stars

By Andrea H. Reay CEO/President Seattle Southside Chamber of Commerce
“Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.”
These words, engraved on the plaque left on the Moon by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, have remained as inspirational as the infamous words spoken by Armstrong as he stepped out of the Lunar Module Eagle 50 years ago. In honor of this momentous anniversary, the Success Foundation and the Chamber are teaming up with the NASA ANGLeS Challenge for the launch of our Explorer’s Post with the BSA. The Apollo Next Giant Leap Student (ANGLeS) Challenge is a national challenge celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. From April to July, students will have the opportunity to recreate the landing using drones and robots, exploring exciting activities and benefiting from one-on-one mentorship. We are grateful for the individuals and businesses in our community and their generous donations which allows us to sponsor two teams (14 students in total) of high school and middle school students. These budding engineers, scientists, strategists, and leaders will participate in a free and engaging opportunity that will help them gain an understanding of what their future could hold as well as build lifelong skills and relationships. When the Success Foundation was established in December of 2017, we knew that we couldn’t do this work alone; we needed the help and support of our community for it to be recognized as the place where businesses, residents, and community partners can live out their best lives. No one succeeds alone, but we all succeed when we work together. We are always looking to expand and grow our programs. If you are interested in joining our work by sponsoring a program, volunteering, or making a donation, please visit our website for more information, or give us a call. Applications for the ANGLeS Challenge are due April 10, so if you know of any students who would benefit from this historic opportunity, please encourage them to apply. DEADLINE TO APPLY IS APRIL 10 All interested candidates should fill out an application (download here) and return it to [email protected] by April 10 at midnight. All applications will be reviewed by committee. Special consideration will be given to those students that can include a letter of recommendation from a teacher and who come from underrepresented and underserved communities. Middle school through high school students are encouraged to apply. For questions about the program or the application, please email Andrea Reay at [email protected] or call (206) 575-3016 during regular business hours. ABOUT THE SUCCESS FOUNDATION In December of 2017 the Chamber established and filed for 501 c 3 status with the IRS and the State of Washington.
The Success Foundation was created to be a charitable enterprise of the Chamber, dedicated to the success of our region in Southwest King County. The Foundation promotes and improves the economic development opportunities of our region and its communities by participating in education, workforce and community engagement and development projects and research. Success means a lot of different things to different people. For the Chamber, and our new charitable enterprise, it means that the people that live, work and enjoy the businesses, communities and amenities in Southwest King County are supported, encouraged and invited to create and define their own success stories. Our community should be recognized as the place where businesses, residents and community partners are able to live out their best lives. With poverty rates in our community exceeding the state average, we know we have our work cut out for us as we focus on raising the tide for all in our region. We also know that we can’t do this work alone, and we need your help.
