Your Daily Dose of Natural Beauty, courtesy Advertiser Zenith Holland Nursery – Two easy care shade lovers:

Today’s image includes a background of two stand-out shade lovers: Lady’s Mantle and Paul’s Glory Hosta. Lady’s Mantle is the chartreuse-y plant with frothy small blossoms toward the front. Paul’s Glory Hosta is the variegated broad leaf plant in the back. Both are easy care, easy-to-grow perennials that flourish in the northwest.

As an herbaceous perennial, Lady’s Mantle is low growing and can be expected to spread because it produces many seeds. It is great planted toward the front of borders where its semi-evergreen foliage will provide a verdant display for most of the year. Watch out though – due to their prolific quality, they can become invasive.

Paul’s Glory Hosta, is an award winner. It was named Hosta of the Year in 1999, as selected by the American Hosta Growers Association. It loves shade but can tolerate some partial sun. It prefers a moist soil and can be relied upon to return each year as an excellent filler at the bottom of rhododendrons, Hydrangeas or other ornamental shrubs. It’s golden variegation in the center of its leaves changes with exposure to sun. In many case, you will find the leaves transform to almost white in the center after a summer of sun. Simply remove the leaves as they make a final die-back in fall, then watch for tender shoots to return in mid-to-late spring.

If you have a shady spot on the garden where you have struggled to find a winning occupant, give these a try. Many deem them a fool-proof choice!
