Your Daily Dose of Natural Beauty, courtesy Advertiser Zenith Holland Nursery – Delosperma Hot Color from the “Ice Plant”:

When you take a look at today’s image you may be struck by the juxtaposition between the plant’s vibrant color and the cool sounding name “Ice Plant.” The name comes from tiny hairs on the leaves and stems which refract the light to suggest ice glistening. However, Delosperma are most successful in anything but ice. They are a warm weather perennial with succulent–like foliage. It is available in several colors, but this hot pink is quite common.

Delosperma has a low and spreading growth and in reliably sunny areas it will bloom all summer long. It is often seen in rock gardens and on slopes and edging. Plants will typically grow about two feet wide, but may surprise you with more in certain conditions. It has even been known to be invasive, however not usually in the PNW.

If you think of it’s native origins in South Africa you will have many clues towards what it likes; Full sun, well draining soil sandy or gravelly are best. Great as a drought tolerant bloomer, you only need to water about once every two weeks and one does of fertilizer in the fall is all that is required. With all that in mind, sign us up for this low maintenance stunner.
