Big changes are in store for the heart of Des Moines, as the City on Monday (April 22) announced a ‘Request for Qualifications’ soliciting development teams to build on commercial property at the City’s Marina – an expansive five acres of prime waterfront real estate – and the gem of the Marina District. The Council is looking to boost the City’s economy by creating a mix of destination retail and other attractions at this Puget Sound view location. A citizens’ “Marina and Beach Park Advisory Committee” was convened in 2012, with thirteen representatives from resident and business stakeholder groups. The committee spent the year vetting various options, so the Council would have direct input from residents regarding Marina development. “The City of Des Moines is seeking qualifications from firms capable of developing waterfront property owned by the City,” Mayor Dave Kaplan said. “Inviting development marks a new era in the history of our City, which has traditionally been a bedroom community with a residential focus, but has begun to encourage commercial development in recent years.” “We look forward to a beautiful new amenity, and vibrant commercial activity at the Marina,” said Council Member Melissa Musser, who served as Council representative to the Advisory Committee. “This is an opportunity to revitalize our community, capitalize on taxpayer assets, and reaffirm to all of us in Des Moines why we choose to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.” “Developing large indoor spaces will allow residents to enjoy the Marina more on cold inclement days, when not as many people venture out,” said City Manager Tony Piasecki. “Now the area offers spectacular scenery with a beach, fishing pier, and miles of trails, but soon people will be able to shop, dine, and look out at the view from indoors as well.” The Request for Qualifications packet containing information about the development sites and the submittal process is available on the City website’s Public Notice Page at SITE VISIT MAY 8 The City of Des Moines will also conduct an information session and site visit on May 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Des Moines Founders Lodge, located at 22030 Cliff Avenue S. in Des Moines.
