A Wine Tasting will benefit Beach Park Historic District at Breeders Theater’s Performances, beginning Oct. 25.

“Wine tastings and hors d’oeuvres sponsored by the Des Moines Legacy Foundation will be available at each of the Breeders Theater’s performances of Blood Pudding,” reads an announcement. “Funds raised  will be used to benefit the Des Moines Beach Park Historic District’s building rehabilitation projects.”

Background

In 2006 the Des Moines Beach Park was listed as a national historic district.  Over the last decade, the City has worked in earnest to rehabilitate the buildings with grant assistance from Washington State and King County.  The Auditorium and Dining Hall are two of eight historic buildings that have benefitted from the grant funds.  The Auditorium is now open for public use and the Dining Hall will be rehabilitated in 2014 and open to the public in 2015.

The remaining six historic buildings (Sun Home Lodge, Picnic Shelter, Restrooms, Roadside  Cabin, Sports Cabin and Carlson House) are also in desperate need of preservation work.  The City is seeking partners from the community that wish to make contributions of cash or sweat equity to repair and/or protect the buildings from further deterioration.  Interested parties may contact the City of Des Moines Parks, Recreation and Senior Services Department at 206-879-6527 for more information.
