Part of this year’s South Sound Opening Day Celebration is display and tours of a few unusual—and a few not so unusual—boats owned by yacht club members – open to the public from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 10.

Of particular interest may be these two classic boats, one a 1928 wooden built at Lake Union Dry Dock and the other a Canadian craft built in 1984 but styled after the classic yachts of the earlier time period (click images to see larger versions):

The economic impact of the Great Depression put a stop to production of the 1928 ‘Dream Boat.’ She is built of white oak, fir and teak. The 1984 boat makes use of fiberglass but has plentiful wood trim.

South Sound Opening Day is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The formal Flag ceremony will be at Noon.

Visitors may enter the yacht club through the gate behind Des Moines Drugs or the gate on the south side of Anthony’s Home Port.
