The Des Moines Historical Society is presenting “The Salt of the Sea: A Fisherman’s Story” as told by local historian and fisherman Bill Rudberg this Wednesday night, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
Come and listen to Bill share fascinating pictures and stories of life at sea on board the schooner, C.A. Thayer, captained by Ed Shields (who later authored a book about life before the mast).
Here’s what to expect:
“In 1949, nineteen-year-old Des Moines resident Bill Rudberg joined the Pacific Coast Cod Fish Company for a four-month fishing journey that took him and thirty other men from Poulsbo, WA to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska and back. Once at sea each man fished from a 19-foot dory boat, hauling in 600 cod each grueling day for two months.”
This event is Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 7-9 p.m. at the Des Moines IOOF Hall located at 728 S. 225th Street. The one-hundred year old IOOF Hall is in downtown Des Moines one-half block west of Marine View Drive on S. 225th.
