DESCRIPTION:The Des Moines community has a special opportunity to recognize one of its longtime residents and veterans\, Pat Nardo\, who will receive a Quilt of Valor during a ceremony at Judson Park from 11 a.m. – Noon on Saturday morning\, June 27\, 2026. \nAt 97 years of age\, Pat continues to inspire those around him with his positive spirit\, resilience\, and dedication to family and community. He and his wife\, Marianne Nardo (pictured above)\, have shared a lifelong marriage that stands as a beautiful example of commitment and partnership. \nThe Quilt of Valor is a distinguished honor presented to veterans in recognition of their military service and sacrifice. Handmade by volunteers through the Quilts of Valor Foundation\, each quilt serves as a tangible expression of gratitude from a grateful nation. \nEvery Quilt of Valor Contains Three Symbolic Layers:\n\nThe top layer represents the many communities and citizens whose freedoms veterans have helped protect.\nThe batting symbolizes warmth\, comfort\, healing\, and peace.\nThe backing represents the strength of the veteran\, their loved ones\, and the nation standing behind them.\n\nDuring the ceremony\, the quilt will be draped around Pat’s shoulders while words of appreciation are shared in recognition of his service to our country. The presentation also includes an official Certificate of Appreciation. \nThis event is intended as a community tribute to Pat’s military service and the many contributions he has made as a longtime Des Moines resident\, neighbor\, friend\, husband\, and member of America’s Greatest Generation. \nBecause seating and parking at Judson Park are limited\, attendance is being reserved for Pat’s close friends\, neighbors\, and local elected officials who wish to personally recognize him on this special occasion. DESCRIPTION:The Highline Amateur Radio Club (HARC) will join amateur radio operators across the country on Saturday\, June 27 as part of the annual ARRL Field Day event at Marvista Park in Normandy Park. \nAccording to HARC\, members will begin setting up equipment around 9 a.m. on June 27\, and radio operations and demonstrations are expected to take place from approximately 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. \nThe event is part of ARRL Field Day\, a nationwide activity organized by the American Radio Relay League that brings together amateur radio operators to practice and demonstrate radio communications. \nHARC participates in the annual event and is inviting community members to learn more about amateur radio and the local radio operator community. \nClub representatives said they would welcome public interest in the event and the role amateur radio operators play in communications and community service. \nThe event will be held at Marvista Park in Normandy Park and is open to those interested in learning more about amateur radio operations and the amateur radio community. \nAdditional information about the club is available through HARC’s website at highlinearc.org.
