DESCRIPTION:Mac Macdonald will speak at a Rotary Club of Des Moines and Normandy Park event starting at Noon on Wednesday\, Aug. 12\, at the Des Moines Theater. \nThe presentation will explore what movies including “Apocalypse Now\,” “The Longest Day\,” “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Boys in the Boat” have to do with Rotary and Rotarians today. \nMacdonald was hired by the organizing committee of the 2014 D-Day commemorations in Normandy\, France\, to address volunteerism among school-age audiences at ceremonies held at each of the invasion beaches\, according to the club. His slide show will focus on what he learned from people who fought in World War II or were caught up in it\, as well as lessons from other movies connected to community service and leadership. \nThe club said Macdonald\, a corporate trainer\, also will draw on his experience teaching leadership in seminars and his time acting in movies and commercials\, including “Apocalypse Now\,” “American Graffiti\,” “Murder She Wrote” and Rainier Beer commercials. \nThe event is open to all.
