DESCRIPTION:The Des Moines Lighted Boat Parade will be held on Saturday night\, Dec. 4\, 2021\, departing from the Des Moines Marina at 6 p.m. \n\n\n\nThat night\, the Des Moines Yacht Club’s annual Lighted Boat Parade will celebrate the holiday season.\nThey will be joined by other boaters from the area – all are welcome.\nThis is a voluntary parade; no charge or fee. Captains can register at the Des Moines Yacht Club website here.\nThere will be a virtual Captains’ meeting to discuss the progress and other safety details on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.\n\n\n\nListed below are approximate times and places for public viewing of the parade. Boats will begin to assemble in front of the Marina around 5:30 p.m. and will depart at 6 p.m. The parade progression will head north along the coastline to Three Tree Point. Then the progression will turn south\, passing back by the Marina and following the coastline to Redondo. DESCRIPTION:Dec. 18 will be WA State Blood Donor Day – a day to commemorate the terrible tragedy that occurred in 2017 when an Amtrak 501 passenger train derailed near DuPont\, killing 3 people and injuring 57 more passengers and crew members. \nMany of the injured needed blood on that day\, and thankfully a plentiful blood supply was available. \nBLOOD DONORS NEEDED DEC. 6 & 7\nIn honor of this day and to help ensure blood is available for future emergencies and other daily patient needs\, the City of Normandy Park is partnering with Bloodworks Northwest once again to run another Pop-Up Blood Donation event on Monday\, Dec. 6 and Tuesday\, Dec. 7 in the Normandy Park City Hall council chambers at 801 SW 174th Street (map below). \nTo ensure social distancing\, appointments are required. DESCRIPTION:An online/virtual Open House will be held for the 24th Ave South Improvement Project on Wednesday\, Dec. 15\, 2021\, from 6 – 7 p.m. \nCity staff will discuss the project and answer questions from the public. \nThe virtual meeting can be accessed at the project’s website below: \nhttps://www.desmoineswa.gov/departments/public_works/transportation_engineering/current_projects \n \nPROJECT DESCRIPTION & NEED\nIn November 2011\, the City produced the City of Des Moines Safe Routes to School Project Report. This report provided a summary of priority Safe Routes to School projects for the five public elementary schools in the City. The report was developed with help from the Des Moines Police Department and Highline Schoold District. Projects were selected in order to enhance safety for students and families walking to school. The report found that pedestrian improvements on 24th Ave ranked as the top priority for Midway Elementary School and had the highest ranking of all projects Citywide. \nRoadway widening and improvement of 24th Ave S\, Kent-Des Moines Rd (SR516) to S 223rd St is an element of the adopted City of Des Moines Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP)\, Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP)\, and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). This project is Segment 2 of the 24th Ave S Corridor Improvements\, with future Segment 1 improvements designated between S 223rd St and S 216th St. \nThe 24th Ave S Improvements Project (Segment 2) will construct improvements on 24th Ave S\, between Kent-Des Moines Road and S 223rd Street. These improvements include: sidewalks\, bike lanes\, reduced travel lane widths\, a two-way left turn lane\, storm drainage\, and decorative street lighting. \nIn 2019\, the City of Des Moines was selected for a grant from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (hereinafter TIB) for project funding on the 24th Avenue South Improvements Project.
