DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate La Posada at the Highline Heritage Museum in Burien on Friday night\, Dec. 8\, 2023. \nThis free holiday event will run from 5 – 8 p.m. \nLa Posada\, which translates to “The Inns” in English\, is a religious festival celebrated in Mexico\, some parts of the United States\, and other Latin American countries. It commemorates the journey of Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe place for Mary to give birth to Jesus Christ. The celebration is a reenactment of this journey\, with participants processing through the streets with candles and singing traditional songs. \nThe celebration originated in Mexico in the 16th century as a way for Spanish missionaries to teach indigenous people about the Christian faith. The missionaries used the celebration as a way to explain the Nativity story and to promote Christian values. DESCRIPTION:The Burien area recently lost a dear\, generous and funny friend recently with the passing of Scott Gifford on Monday\, Oct. 30\, 2023. \n\n\n\nSon of Patti Gifford\, and sister of Christina Scott was a longtime member of Highline Schools Foundation’s Board of Trustees\, serving since 2011. He was Board President in 2013\, was a longstanding member of the Finance committee\, and supported various programs and committees throughout his tenure\, including board development\, scholarships\, governance\, Gold Star\, and more.  \n\n\n\nRaised in the Puget Sound area\, Gifford was a longtime resident of Burien\, as well as an attorney specializing in estate planning and business services in his practice at Scott Gifford Law.  \n\n\n\nHis commitment to Highline Public Schools extended to his work on the Capital Oversight Committee providing stewardship over the 2016 and 2022 school bonds. \n\n\n\nHe was active in the Highline Community\, also serving on the board of the Burien Actors Theater (BAT)\, and Seattle Shakespeare in the Park.  \n\n\n\n“Our hearts ache to let you all know that our Funny Man Scott Gifford has passed\,” reads an announcement on a memorial page. “On Monday afternoon (Oct. 30\, 2023)\, with his mom by his side and his Aunt Carol and cousin Kim for support\, Scott passed peacefully and is finally at rest after such a long and hard-fought battle with colon cancer. We will miss him more than we can express but burst with pride and joy with how he lived his life for his friends and family. Never stepping down from an opportunity to poke fun at himself or those he loved\, Scott also led a life of adventure. Traveling to many countries and living his life to the fullest.” \n\n\n\nThis memorial will also be for Ed Diamond. \n\n\n\n“While Scott was taking his final breaths\, Ed Diamond fell out of his wheelchair at the family group home where he was living with Alzheimer’s. SUMMARY:December stroll around Des Moines with the Waterland Walkers on Saturday\, Dec. 16
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at WABI Burien: \nFor its December walk\, the Des Moines Waterland Walkers will walk on Saturday rather than Sunday\, so participants can check out the Des Moines shops along the walk.  \nWe’ll meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday\, Dec. 16\, 2023 at Big Catch Plaza (where the Dollar Tree store is located) near the Big Catch sculpture in the parking lot. The address of the store is 21815 Marine View Drive (intersection of S 216th Street\, 7th Ave S and Marine View Drive). \nWe’ll head south on 7th Avenue\, turn down to check out the view at Sound View Park and then continue south along the marina. We’ll head over to Marine View Drive by the Red Robin\, and then take a leisurely stroll north on Marine View Drive back to the starting point. Participants will have the opportunity to visit the shops along the way. \nThis walk is approximately 2 miles round trip on mostly flat paved surfaces. SUMMARY:Burning Boat Festival will benefit homeless Highline Public Schools students on New Year’s Eve
DESCRIPTION:The second annual Burning Boat Festival will be held on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31\, 2023)\, from 6–9 p.m. at Des Moines Beach Park\, with the boat set to burn at 9 p.m. \nThis year’s event will benefit children experiencing homelessness in Highline Public Schools. \nGuest are invited to write and drop a New Year’s message into a wooden boat\, built by a local high school class\, which will be burned safely at 9 p.m.\, sending your messages off into the night. \nThere will be free parking at the nearby Des Moines Marina. \nCome enjoy s’mores\, games\, entertainment\, hot chocolate bar\, a beer garden and more. \n“Our mission is to enhance the quality of life in Des Moines by funding services for people in need with an emphasis on intervention and prevention\,” organizers said. \nThe first event – held last year on New Year’s Eve 2022 – raised $22\,035 which was presented to Valley Cities to fund mental health and substance use recovery in our community. \nThe 2023 ticket sales goal is 500\, and funds are being raised directly to the Highline Schools Foundation. \nFor more info\, or to buy tickets\, please click below: \nhttps://givebutter.com/Burn23\n \nVideo\nHere’s a video we produced about last year’s event: \n\nMore info here: \n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/burningboatfestival
