SUMMARY:Men in Black Festival announces fun new ‘Alien Abduction Look-Alike’ contest for MIBBB Fest on June 13
DESCRIPTION:Calling all alien abductees! The annual Men in Black Birthday Bash\, aka MIBBB Fest\, will kick off on Friday\, June 13\, 2025 with a fun new event – the Colleen Rafferty Look-Alike Contest. \nThe contest\, which will be held at Marina Mercantile from 6:30–8:30 p.m.\, is inspired by the character of Colleen Rafferty\, played by Kate McKinnon on Saturday Night Live. The recurring Rafferty character is interviewed by government agents after allegedly being kidnapped by aliens – here’s a sample sketch: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttendees are encouraged to come to this event dressed as their version of Colleen (or Carl) Rafferty. \n“We can’t wait to be in a room of Colleen and Carl Raffertys and create a space where they can share their favorite stories\,” said MIBBB Fest co-founder Steve Edmiston. “We believe the tickets for this free event in this cozy venue will go quickly.” \nTickets Are Free But Act Fast\nFree tickets are now available at Eventbrite. \nThe event is open to anyone 21+\, and will be held at Marina Mercantile in Des Moines (map below). \nThe look-alike event is non-commercial; free for participants to enter; no purchase is required; and no endorsements are implied. Complete look-alike contest rules (and award categories) will be posted before June 13. \nMIBBB Fest commemorates the appearance of UFOs off Maury Island\, WA and the world’s first encounter with the iconic Men in Black. On June 21\, 1947\, Harold Dahl of Tacoma reported six flying saucers off the shores of Maury Island. The next morning\, Dahl alleged he was visited by the first “Man in Black.” Dahl’s story helped launch 1947’s “Summer of the Saucers\,” when thousands of UFOs were reported worldwide (watch the award-winning short film here). \nMIBBB Fest is anchored by its signature cosplay event\, the Men in Black Birthday Bash on Saturday\, June 21\, held at the Quarterdeck in Des Moines with a view across Puget Sound to Maury Island. \nIn the days leading up to the event\, ticket-holders receive multiple “mission briefs” explaining the history and mythology of the Maury Island Incident. \nAdditional events for the weeklong MIBBB Fest will be announced soon. For more information\, including news about additional events: \n\nVisit the MIBBB Fest website\nFollow MIBBB on Facebook \nFollow MIBBB on Instagram\n\n\n\n\nAbout MIBBB Fest\nHeld each year in Des Moines\, WA\, MIBBB Fest commemorates history’s first alleged encounter with the so-called Men in Black\, the infamous 1947 Maury Island Incident\, and the top-secret government intervention that followed. SUMMARY:Seniors and activists plan ‘No Kings’ rally in Des Moines on Saturday\, June 14
DESCRIPTION:Two grassroots organizations in Des Moines are joining a national day of protest this Saturday\, June 14\, 2024\, with a “No Kings” rally\, urging residents to take a stand against what they call authoritarian overreach and political corruption. \nThe event\, organized by Seniors for the Constitution and Indivisible Des Moines\, will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 14 at Big Catch Plaza\, located at the corner of S. 216th Street and Marine View Drive (map below). \nOrganizers are promoting it as a peaceful demonstration that includes live music\, free water\, signs\, and materials for participants to make their own. \nThe rally is part of a coordinated national movement protesting former President Donald Trump and his allies\, whom organizers accuse of threatening democracy\, civil liberties\, and public welfare programs. \n“No Kings” day is a response to “the increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies\,” according to event materials. The statement cites concerns about attacks on free speech\, immigration crackdowns\, erosion of court authority\, and proposed cuts to Medicaid alongside tax breaks for the wealthy. \nThe groups\, which together claim more than 400 active members\, are also using the rally to support the local community. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food or cash donations for the Des Moines Area Food Bank. \n“We’d like to see young people and families join us\,” said one member of Seniors for the Constitution. “We’re doing this for them\, for our grandchildren and yours.” \nParking is available at the plaza\, in nearby lots\, and along side streets. Carpooling is encouraged to ease congestion. \nMore details are available at www.seniorsfortheconstitution.org.

SUMMARY:‘Sparky’s Revenge’ Dog Disc Tournament on Sunday\, June 22 will pay tribute to 1947 Maury Island Incident victim
DESCRIPTION:In 1947\, a Tacoma man reported seeing six flying discs while boating off Maury Island. He claimed molten slag from one of the discs fell on the boat\, killing his dog\, “Sparky.” \nThe infamous “Maury Island Incident” launched the “Summer of the Saucers\,” and the first alleged encounter with a mysterious Man in Black. \nThis year’s Men In Black Birthday Bash (aka MIBBB Fest) will pay homage to Sparky with a new event. On Sunday\, June 22\, the final day of MIBBB Fest\, Destination Des Moines will host Sparky’s Revenge\, a flying disc dog tournament at the Des Moines Field House. The fantastic frisbee-catching dogs will be members of the Summit Disc Dog club. \nThis is a free\, non-ticketed event – just show up! \n“It was 78 years ago that Sparky was killed by a flying disc. Giving the dogs a chance to bite a flying disc back just made sense\,” said MIBBB Fest co-founder Steve Edmiston. “This tragic story has been largely forgotten to history. We’ve been looking for a way to honor Sparky for several years. We are grateful to Destination Des Moines fand Summit Disc Dogs for bringing this idea to life.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe tournament will be held at the Des Moines Field House (map below) from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. on Sunday\, June 22. The event is free\, and the public is invited to watch. No ticket is required.\n\n\n\n“The Summit Disc Dog Club has been competing in the K9 Frisbee Toss & Fetch Worldwide League\, which is the largest dog sport on planet earth\, since June of 2021\,” Summit Disc Dogs founder and team captain David Story said. “The sport is great for both owners and dogs\, and fun to watch. We can’t wait to share it with MIBBB Fest! It’s a friendly environment\, but it’s also fun to compete; we compete in 7 seasons every year that each last for 5 weeks in duration. Our club has won 10 different division championships and is currently ranked No. 5 of over 300 different clubs worldwide.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMIBBB Fest 2025 features multiple events\, running June 13-22. The annual festival commemorates the Maury Island Incident. \nMIBBB Fest kicks off June 13 with an alien abductee lookalike contest inspired by recurring SNL character Colleen Rafferty\, played by Kate McKinnon. The festival is anchored by its signature cosplay event\, the Men in Black Birthday Bash (MIBBB) on June 21. \n\n\n\n\n\nGet the details on all MIBBB Fest events here.\n\n\n\nMore info:\n\nVisit the MIBBB Fest website\nFollow MIBBB on Facebook \nFollow MIBBB on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAbout MIBBB Fest\n\n\n\nHeld each year in Des Moines\, Washington\, MIBBB Fest commemorates history’s first alleged encounter with the so-called Men in Black\, the infamous 1947 Maury Island Incident\, and the top-secret government intervention that followed. This local festival was founded in 2022 by a small group of Des Moines residents\, including Des Moines natives Steve and Melody Edmiston\, who are passionate about sharing the fascinating stories of their hometown’s history. \n\n\n\nAbout Steve Edmiston\n\n\n\nSteve is an appointee to the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau\, and has keynoted the Washington State Historical Society\, Smith Tower Rumrunners Club\, McMenamin’s History Pubs\, conferences\, festivals\, historical societies\, and business groups.  He is also a business\, entertainment\, Intellectual Property attorney\, and independent film screenwriter/producer. He is credited with four feature films (including Lifetime’s Crimes of the Past).
