A deceased person was discovered inside a home Sunday evening, Feb. 1 after a residential fire in Des Moines, according to the Des Moines Police Department.

At about 6:35 p.m. Sunday night, multiple 911 callers reported a house fire in the 1400 block of South 216th Street (map below).

Crews from South King Fire responded to extinguish the blaze, while Des Moines officers assisted with traffic control and scene security.

During a search of the residence, fire personnel located a deceased person inside the home. The fire was later brought under control.

King County fire investigators and Des Moines Police detectives are jointly investigating the incident.

Authorities said the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed and investigators are working to determine both the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police said there is no known risk to the public.

Fire and police personnel were expected to remain on scene for several hours, and the public is asked to avoid the area.
