An “extremely emaciated” harbor seal was found on a dock near the Linger Longer Marina in Quilcene Bay on Feb. 19.
Center Valley Animal Rescue (CVAR) responded, safely capturing the seal and transferring it into the care of Sealife Response, Rehabilitation and Research (SR3), a marine wildlife rehabilitation organization based out of Des Moines, Wash.
“During her sedated intake exam the next day, x-ray imaging showed wounds to her face from a bullet,” the organization shared on Feb. 21. “We are monitoring her condition closely, preparing for further medical diagnostics and will determine her likelihood of recovery in the coming days.”
CVAR Founder Sara Penhallegon spoke with SR3 staff on Feb. 23.
“This adult female seal is currently on pain medication, antibiotics and she is eating. She is awaiting a CT scan,” Penhallegon told The Leader. “We are all hoping that she will be OK.”
