Work is continuing on the Marina Steps project in Des Moines, with several construction activities planned in the coming weeks, according to the City of Des Moines.
City officials said crews from Bayshore Construction Company will conduct potholing to locate existing underground utilities, continue installing a sewer main and begin work on stormwater facilities associated with retaining walls.
Construction of retaining wall footings on the north end of the project site is also scheduled.
The city said visitors to the marina area can expect increased construction activity during this phase, including the presence of heavy equipment and intermittent impacts to access near the work zone.
Officials noted that the work is part of ongoing improvements at the site and said additional updates will be provided as the project progresses.
The project is an approximately $8.5 million public works and waterfront access improvement designed to better connect the city’s downtown to the marina.
According to the city, sources for funding are:
- WA Dept. of Commerce – $1,969,00
- WA Dept. of Ecology – $500,000
- American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) – $266,000
- City of Des Moines
- Marina and Redondo Development Bond – $8,110,000
- Real Estate Excise Tax – $1,750,000
Currently under construction, the project is expected to be completed in December, and will include a combination of stairs, ADA-accessible ramps, terraced landscaping, seating areas and public gathering spaces spanning more than 40,000 square feet.
In addition to improving pedestrian access across a significant elevation change, the project also incorporates stormwater management features and is considered a key first phase in the city’s broader long-term vision to revitalize its waterfront and strengthen economic activity in the area.
