Community members are planning a demonstration Wednesday afternoon, May 27 in Des Moines following what an anonymous resident described as the detention of a community member by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents near the Dick’s Drive-In on Pacific Highway South.
According to information provided in an email to The Waterland Blog, the incident happened Tuesday, May 26 at/near the Dick’s Drive In near Pacific Highway South and South 240th Street (map below).
The resident described the incident as a “kidnapping” carried out by ICE agents and said community members want more public awareness about immigration enforcement activity in South King County.
“Yesterday, a member of our community was kidnapped by ICE agents right here at the Dick’s Drive In on Pacific Highway,” the resident wrote in an email to us.
The resident said a public gathering was planned for Wednesday, May 27, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the intersection of South 240th Street and Pacific Highway South in Des Moines.
Organizers encouraged residents to attend and bring signs with messages including “No More ICE Kidnappings” and “Your Neighbor Was Kidnapped Here By ICE,” according to the message.
“We are asking you to feature this incident so that our community is informed and aware of the reality taking place on our streets,” the resident said in an email. “It is vital that our neighbors know that one of their own was taken, and that we are choosing to stand together to show that they are not alone. Whether or not people can join us at the intersection today, we need this issue to be visible to all of Des Moines.”
The resident also said they believe incidents involving immigration enforcement actions often go unreported in local media and urged broader community awareness.
No additional details about the reported detention, including confirmation from ICE, the identity of the person involved, or whether any charges or immigration proceedings are pending, were available Wednesday morning. The Waterland Blog reached out to ICE for confirmation and additional information but had not received a response as of publication time.
