The Des Moines Police Department is reminding residents that fireworks are prohibited within city limits and that violations can result in a $513 civil infraction.

Under Des Moines Municipal Code 9.42.035, it is unlawful to possess, use, discharge or ignite fireworks in the city, according to the department.

Police emphasized that a person does not have to light fireworks to be cited. Under Des Moines Municipal Code 9.42.060, property owners, renters, lessees or anyone in control of a property may also be cited if fireworks are discharged on their property or if they allow fireworks to be used there.

The department said it recognizes that fireworks are a tradition for many families but noted that they also create serious fire hazards, disturb neighbors, frighten pets and can cause significant injuries.

Instead of using personal fireworks, police are encouraging residents to celebrate the Fourth of July by attending professional fireworks displays.

“By working together, we can help keep our neighborhoods safe and enjoyable for everyone,” police said in its reminder.
