A major infrastructure project aimed at improving safety and connectivity along Barnes Creek Trail and South 240th Street in Des Moines is moving forward, with construction bids set to open July 29, 2025.

The project will complete the southern segment of Barnes Creek Trail and enhance South 240th Street between 16th Ave South and 20th Ave South.

Planned upgrades include new sidewalks, street lighting, underground utility installation, and other improvements to support pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

“Exciting upgrades are on the way to improve safety and connectivity for everyone using Barnes Creek Trail and South 240th Street,” the City of Des Moines announced.

The estimated construction cost is between $5.75 million and $6.75 million.

The project is being funded through a collaboration with the Washington State Department of Transportation Local Programs, Sound Transit, King County Metro, and the Highline Water District.

The city added that updates will be shared as the project progresses.
