Families across south King County are being invited to take part in a free, family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration at the Des Moines Burning Boat Festival, with organizers seeking a limited number of households to attend the event as hosted guests.

The annual waterfront event, hosted by the City of Des Moines in partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Des Moines and Normandy Park, will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31 in front of the Des Moines Pier (410 S. 222nd Street, map below).

Organizers said the Fund-a-Family effort is designed to remove barriers to participation by allowing selected families to simply arrive and enjoy the evening without planning or cost. The goal is to provide a welcoming community experience focused on togetherness, reflection and starting the new year with hope.

The festival will feature fire pits, smores and hot cocoa, live music and entertainment, food trucks, and a range of activities for children, including crafts, face painting, a scavenger hunt, a cookie walk and a fire truck experience.

The centerpiece of the evening is the Burning Boat ceremony, a long-standing tradition in Des Moines in which participants write down what they want to release from the past year and what they hope for in the year ahead. Those reflections are placed into a wooden boat and set aflame as a symbol of renewal.

Families who enjoy community events and shared experiences are encouraged to apply to participate as hosted guests. Community members who want to support the effort are also invited to get involved – learn more here.

“Let’s close out the year with laughter, warmth, and community spirit — and welcome 2026 together, one joyful moment at a time,” organizers said.
