The City of Des Moines is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Waterland Parade Grand Marshal, inviting residents to recognize individuals who have made a lasting impact in the community.

Nominations will be accepted through April 1, according to city officials and the Waterland Parade Committee.

This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, July 18, starting at 6 p.m.

Each year, the Waterland Parade honors a Grand Marshal who reflects the values and character of the Des Moines community. Organizers say the honor is intended for individuals who demonstrate service, leadership, kindness or a long-standing commitment to improving the community.

Some previous Grand Marshals include:

  • 2025: Tony Hettler and Michelle Fawcett
  • 2023: Steve Huff (Hydroplane Racing Champion)
  • 2019: Pat O’Day (Broadcaster)
  • 2014: Jim Langston (Community Leader/Historian)
  • 2014 (Honorary): Warren Bonus

“A Grand Marshal is more than just a leader in the parade, they are someone who has made a meaningful impact through service, leadership, kindness, or a lifelong commitment to making our community a better place,” according to the City of Des Moines.

Residents are encouraged to submit nominations by email here and include a brief description explaining why their nominee deserves the recognition. Nominations can include a range of community members, from volunteers to local leaders.
