The City of Des Moines is inviting the community to celebrate the Grand Opening of the new Redondo Pier, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 13.
The celebration will begin at 11 a.m. at Redondo Pier and will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, community celebration, waterfront views and a first look at the newly completed pier, according to the city.
City officials said the reopening comes after years of planning, construction and community support to restore the waterfront destination.
As we previously reported, the Des Moines City Council gave unanimous approval in July, 2025 to accept a $3.8 million dollar bid to rebuild the pier. The old pier was built in 1980, and has been closed since 2019 due to safety concerns.
“We’re excited to officially reopen this beloved waterfront destination to the public,” the city said in its announcement.
The city said the event will bring together city leaders, community members and project partners to mark what officials described as an important milestone for the community.
Officials are encouraging residents to bring family, friends and “community spirit” to celebrate the return of one of Des Moines’ longtime waterfront landmarks.
“We can’t wait to see you there!”
